Hospitality Business Operations

Some people dream of owning their own hospitality business; a café or catering business, a Bed and breakfast or a fast food takeaway. NZSFW offers a 30 week part-time course by distance learning, that introduces the key attributes that are needed to ensure your hospitality business survives and prospers. This course is designed for people who are working in another profession and wish to investigate the possibilities of the hospitality industry but are not yet ready to make a long term commitment. The course enables students to better understand the challenges involved and to learn from experienced tutors about the issues of running these types of businesses.

Course Outline:
Business Compliance
This course covers the principles of small business management. Students learn about business compliance (legal, accounting) and the set-up costs of a hospitality business. They learn how to cost menus, analyse business costs and use ratios to understand them. They study successful hospitality businesses through case studies and visits. Students learn about employment law and how to build effective teams to run a sound operation.
This course enables students to learn how to confidently use a computer in a business environment. Students study Microsoft Word and Excel. Among other skills, they learn to write spreadsheets for budgeting and costing.
NZSFW Certificate in Wine:
Here students learn about the wine varietals and how to evaluate them. Wines are tasted blind and students learn to write short descriptions of each wine. Students develop a sound general knowledge about Old and New World wines and wine making processes.
Restaurant and Wine Service:
Students complete a number of unit standards which cover the practical side of running a restaurant or café. Four nights work experience at Hay's gives students a feel for the important front of house aspect of running a hospitality business. During this time they learn to make espresso beverages; recommend and open wine and take orders. Students also study towards their General Manager’s Certificate for the Sale of Liquor Act and complete hygiene units 167 and 168.
Course Entry:
Student must have their own computer with an Internet connection and email address. Students must attend seven compulsory two day weekend seminars in Christchurch over seven months. Students must complete four nights work experience at Hay's.
The course is open to anyone 18 years and over.

Weekend 4 Saturday 10th - Sunday 11th June
Weekend 5 Friday 7th, Saturday 8th - Sunday 9th July (three days)
Weekend 6 Saturday 5th - Sunday 6th August
Weekend 7 Saturday 9th - Sunday 10th September
The fee covers all costs associated with the course.
Computers are available for the students to use at NZSFW.
