Barista, 5 days

Introduction

This 5 day (20 hour) course will teach you to make perfect coffee every time. It is designed to give you the knowledge and skills needed to prepare espresso coffees in a commercial environment and classes are held in our own barista cafe at the school.

What will I Learn?

The course will cover basic espresso understanding, the machine and its components, dosing, tamping, extracting and basic maintenance as well as texturing to be able to prepare difference espresso based beverages. You will learn about the origins of coffee, the different coffee varieties and the terminology used in the coffee industry. To fully prepare you for the cafe industry you will also learn about preparing and presenting tea and specialty teas.

Pathways to further study

Graduates can return to NZSFW to study Advanced Cookery, the Advanced WSET® Sommelier programme or enrol in the Restaurant & Cafe Management programme if they wish to eventually own their own hospitality business.

Career Opportunities

Graduates will be able to work in all fields of their chosen specialisation including hotels, resorts, luxury lodges, cruise ships, international yachts, fine dining (5 star) restaurants, cafés and caterers.

Graduation placement service

All graduates have access to the NZSFW Graduate Placement Service when it is time to seek employment. This service is also available for industry placements during your studies.

Programme Start Dates 2012

  • These will commence on our Auckland campuses from 2012. Courses are monthly from February to December. Classes will either in the mornings (9am to 1pm) or in the afternoons (1pm - 5pm). Please watch this website for 2012 dates and times.
